7 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking

7-DAY ITINERARY: GORILLA TREKKING AND CHIMPANZEE TRACKING.

This 7-day safari combines two of Uganda’s most memorable wildlife experiences: tracking chimpanzees in Kibale Forest and mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey takes you through western and southwestern Uganda, with time for forest walks, scenic drives and relaxation between the trekking activities.

Itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe/Kampala.

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will meet your driver-guide and transfer to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. Depending on your arrival time, you will relax at the hotel or enjoy an optional visit to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or another nearby attraction.

Your guide will brief you on the safari, confirm the following day’s departure arrangements and help you prepare for the journey to Kibale Forest.

Accommodation: Lodge in Entebbe/Kampala.

Day 2: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast, depart for western Uganda and travel towards Fort Portal and Kibale Forest National Park. The drive passes through rural communities, farmland, tea plantations and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Arrive at Kibale Forest National Park, check in, relax, and prepare for the next day’s activity. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Your guide will explain the chimpanzee tracking arrangements and advise you on suitable clothing and footwear for the forest.

Accommodation: Isunga Lodge.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary visit.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You will learn about the rules for observing chimpanzees and the importance of maintaining a safe distance from the animals. Enter Kibale Forest with your guide to search for a habituated chimpanzee community. During the trek, you may see other primates, forest birds, butterflies and different tree species. The time needed to locate chimpanzees varies according to their movements and forest conditions.

Once the chimpanzees are located, you will have the permitted viewing time under the guide’s guidance. Return to the starting point and head back to your lodge for lunch or rest. In the afternoon, you will visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided community nature walk where you will spot primates such as the red-colobus monkey, chimpanzees, white-and-black colobus monkey, and various bird species. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Isunga Lodge.

Day 4: Transfer to Rushaga, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After breakfast, depart for southwestern Uganda and travel towards Rushaga in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey passes through highland settlements, cultivated hills and rural trading centres. On arrival, check in and rest after the drive. Your guide will confirm the next morning’s gorilla trekking arrangements.

Accommodation: Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge.

Day 5: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

After an early breakfast, head to the gorilla trekking briefing point. Park rangers will assign your group to a habituated gorilla family and explain the trekking rules.

Accompanied by guides and trackers, enter Bwindi’s Forest to search for the gorillas. The trek can involve steep slopes, thick vegetation and muddy trails, and its duration depends on where the gorilla family is located.

When you find the gorillas, you will spend the permitted one hour observing their behaviour and taking photographs without flash, while following the rangers’ instructions.

After the trek, return to the briefing point and transfer to your lodge. Spend the remainder of the day resting or enjoying the lodge facilities.

Accommodation: Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge.

Day 6: Leisure and Optional Community Activities in Bwindi

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge and have a relaxed day in the Rushaga area. You may choose an optional Batwa cultural experience, a community visit, a guided nature walk, or time to relax at the lodge.

A community visit can provide insight into local livelihoods, traditional knowledge and the relationship between neighbouring communities and forest conservation. Activities should be arranged through reputable local guides and community organisations.

Accommodation: Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge.

Day 7: Return to Entebbe or Kampala

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Entebbe or Kampala for your flight. You can travel by road or by flight based on your travel arrangements and budget. End of your trip.

Conclusion

This safari offers an opportunity to observe chimpanzees and mountain gorillas in their natural forest habitats while exploring two of Uganda’s important conservation areas. It combines guided wildlife experiences with scenic road travel and time to learn about communities living near the forests.
