Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kasese

Upon arrival in Kasese, the gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains you will either reach by road from Kampala or by air to Kasese Airport. You will be met by your guide and transfer to your accommodation.
Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to explore Kasese town or relax at your lodge.
Overnight stay in Kasese.

Day 2Nyakalengija (1,615m) to Nyabitaba Hut (2,652m)

After breakfast, transfer to Nyakalengija, the starting point of the trek. Meet the guides and porters, obtain permits, and begin the ascent.

Trek through lush montane forest to Nyabitaba Hut, where  the dense montane forest envelops you, alive with the sounds of exotic birdlife and the rustle of wildlife. Your destination for the night is Nyabitaba Hut, a cozy refuge nestled amidst the verdant greenery, offering respite after your first day of trekking.

Distance: Approximately 9 kilometers.
Duration: 4-6 hours.
Overnight stay at Nyabitaba Hut.

Day 3Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut (3,414m)

Enjoy your tea and depart to Nyabitaba Hut,  continue ascending through the forest and heather zone.

Continue your ascent through the enchanting forest, gradually climbing higher into the mist-shrouded mountains. Crossing the Kurt Shaffer Bridge and traversing the Bujuku River, you will  enter the ethereal realm of the heather zone. Here, amidst the otherworldly landscape, lies John Matte Hut, your sanctuary for the night, offering a glimpse into the rugged beauty of the Rwenzoris.

Distance: Approximately 11 kilometers.
Duration: 6-7 hours.
Overnight stay at John Matte Hut.

Day 4John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

Enjoy your breakfast and continue the ascent through the Alpine Zone, passing through the Bigo Bog.

As the landscape transforms once more, you’ll ascend into the alpine zone, where towering peaks pierce the sky and alpine meadows stretch out before you in a patchwork of vibrant hues. Passing through the mystical Bigo Bog and ascending to the shores of Lake Bujuku, you will  arrive at Bujuku Hut, a serene haven nestled beneath the watchful gaze of Mount Baker and Mount Speke.

Distance: Approximately 6 kilometers.
Duration: 4-5 hours.
Overnight stay at Bujuku Hut.

Day 5Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut (4,541m)

With the summit in sight, you will mbark on the final leg of your journey, ascending steeply to Scott Elliot Pass and traversing the rugged terrain of the Bujuku Valley. Amidst the pristine alpine wilderness, Elena Hut stands as a testament to your perseverance, offering a brief respite before the ultimate challenge that awaits.

Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers.
Duration: 3-4 hours.
Overnight stay at Elena Hut.

Day 6Elena Hut to Margherita Peak (5,109m) and Descend to Nyakalengija

Early morning start for the summit attempt of Margherita Peak, the highest peak in the Rwenzori Mountains.
Descend back to Elena Hut and continue to Nyakalengija, completing the central circuit trek.

Distance: Approximately 18 kilometers.
Duration: 12-14 hours (summit day).
Meet your transport and transfer back to Kasese.

End of the trek.

Please note that hiking in the Rwenzori Mountains requires a good level of fitness and preparation. It’s essential to pack appropriate clothing, gear, and provisions for the trek. Yes, we highly recommend booking pre-tour and post-tour accommodation. Arriving a day early gives you a chance to rest from your travels, adjust to the local environment, and ensures that you’re ready to start your adventure on time. Booking accommodation for after your tour allows you to relax and reflect on your incredible journey through the Rwenzori Mountains before continuing with your travels. Our team can assist you in finding suitable options to make your experience as comfortable and convenient as possible.

What is cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy is designed to be as flexible and understanding as possible. If you need to cancel your trek for any reason, here’s what you can expect:

1. More than 30 days before departure: You can cancel your trip for a full refund, minus a small administrative fee to cover processing costs.
2. Between 15 to 30 days before departure: We offer a 50% refund of the total trip cost, as we may have already incurred costs on your behalf.
3. Less than 15 days before departure: Unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund as we will have committed resources to your trek by this time.
